Rediscovering my Encaustic Creativity

It’s hard to believe we’re already well into January, but today, for the first time in months, I finally felt ready to begin a new encaustic painting. The past year was a whirlwind—full of highs and lows, challenges with my health, the big change of moving house in November and much happening with friends and family. With everything going on, it’s no wonder I’ve felt a bit drained.

This morning, I decided to head into the studio without any expectations. The first surprise? It was freezing! Even a bottle of water had frozen solid. So, I turned on the SAD light, started warming the wax, and took the time to make myself a cuppa. By the time the studio had warmed up, I felt ready to begin.

I was amazed at how naturally the process came back to me. Even though I’ve painted for years, it’s incredible how you can forget the way you do things—and how quickly it all comes flooding back when you let yourself start.

Hours passed in a blur as I worked, completely engrossed in the moment. Now I’m tired but deeply content. A painting is beginning to take shape, and more importantly, I’ve reconnected with the joy of creating.

This experience reminded me that creativity doesn’t leave us—it waits for us, patiently, until we’re ready to return.

Mel has begun a painting in encaustic wax. The image has blue sky with fluffy clouds. A dark mountain with a lake shore beginning to emerge.
